How to care for Symphyllia Wilsoni in a Reef Tank
Symphyllia (now often Australophyllia) are beautiful LPS corals needing stable, clean water, low-to-moderate light (50-100 PAR), and low-to-moderate flow, with target feeding of meaty foods supplementing their zooxanthellae. Maintain 74-78°F, 1.024-1.026 salinity, pH 8.1-8.4, Alk 8-12dKH, Ca 400-450ppm, and keep nitrates low (2-10ppm). Give them space as they can have long sweeper tentacles, and watch for tissue recession if flow or light is too intense.
Lighting & Flow
  • Light: Low to moderate intensity, gradually acclimating them; they can handle higher light but risk bleaching if moved too quickly.
  • Flow: Moderate, ensuring gas exchange without damaging tissue; too much can cause shrinkage.
Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 74-78°F (23-26°C).
  • Salinity: 1.024-1.026 SG.
  • pH: 8.1-8.4.
  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8-12 dKH.
  • Calcium (Ca): 400-450 ppm.
  • Magnesium (Mg): 1250-1350 ppm.
  • Nitrate (NO3): 2-10 ppm.
  • Phosphate (PO4): 0.02-0.07 ppm.
